No More Traffic Exchange.

4 May 2007

Regarding to the Adsense Team email notification. I consider to remove affiliate link which I have promoted previously on this Blog. Even though the email was not clearly pointing on those two third party traffic services, but I think this has been considered as Grey area.

According to the Adsense note about Traffic Exchange
, it would be better for me to remove those affiliate links from this Blog.

We occasionally receive questions from publishers interested in using traffic exchanges to bring traffic to their site. While these services may help advertise your site, we don’t recommend using them, as they may also result in similar invalid activity. We realize that you may have questions about a specific traffic service and whether it could potentially create invalid impressions or clicks. However, please understand that we’re unable to comment on any particular third-party service

Text to Speech Tool to Double Information Take Up

22 April 2007

Firefox

My journey to utilize text to speech tools was began since I read an article about Mozila Firefox. Thing that makes this article so special for me because it’s written by a blind person. He said in order to use the full potentials of Firefox Internet Browser he combined it with a text to speech software therefore he could navigate the software easily.

Personal background of the writer is giving me a strong inspiration and a short of idea. Why not utilizing my hearing ability to capture a new information at the same time when I’m reading ? Instead of just hearing music, it would be better to hear an audio book during my reading session.

In case of Firefox I can “hear” a page and at the same time I’m reading on some other pages, it giving me more information in a same period of time. The first thing I was looking for is add-on for Firefox which could add text to speech feature in firefox. I found Speak It add-on looks perfect for my requirement. It using the built in Microsoft Windows Text to speech engine so it only deliver small size file to install, and its free.

Since I use Windows XP on my pc, I only have limited option to change reader voices. The default voice is Microsoft Sam which I found as a boring voice since it read sentences flat without a noticeable intonation. I should also reducing the reading speed to understand the sentence well. It’s not the voice you’d want to listen to all day long, so I change to Microsoft Mary which sounds better. You could compare three voices from Microsoft text to speech engine i.e. Sam, Mike and Marry by installing MS API 5. I heard that Text to speech engine on Windows Vista has been improved greatly comparing to its predecessor by adding a more human voice called Microsoft Anna.

Beware of Cookies

15 April 2007

John Chow

You may know about Cookies on your web browser. It gives identification to your browser and its useful for authenticating, tracking and maintaining specific information about you. Once you visit a website it deliver a small package of data to your computer, and stay in your hard disk until expired or get deleted

Cookies itself is not harmful but it could be used for abusive purpose, for instance in affiliate marketing. Normally an affiliate link (like several links in this page) will deliver you to the reseller site with certain affiliate ID only when you click on the link. If you not decided to buy on the reseller site right away, the affiliate ID still remain on your computer as a cookie. When you revisiting the reseller site several days later and buy something from that place, those cookies will be used as reference and the owner will receive credit of it.

But recently I read article from John Chow about abusing cookies. Its a bad suggestion and considered as cheating by many major affiliate program. Those trick works by putting affiliate links inside an iframe code. Since it loads every time you visit the page automatically, its like forcing an affiliate cookie down someone’s throat. Many affiliate program will banned the website owner immediately if they noticed those cheat trick.

Conserving Bandwidth

11 April 2007

bandwidth

Bandwidth limitation is this Blog’s problem. I was not expecting for a huge web traffic coming just overnight which could drag my bandwidth near to it’s limit. Well it’s not yet happened but I must aware about it’s possibility.

Several days ago, on 5th April to be exact, I receive a short exposure on StumbleUpon. I didn’t even notice which article was gaining that short exposure since I can’t trace that back on StumbleUpon. It was a very short appearance I guess. I knew about it later when I checked my cache on Google and I saw a wrong image appeared on this page. Then I checked my visitor’s statistic just to realized that I received a surge of web traffic coming from StumbleUpon.

This surge of visitors remind me to optimize this Blog’s file size even more. The main page size is around 107 KB at the moment. This means my bandwidth will be used up after 10.000 hits only on the main page. Because I have only 1 GB data transfer limit for each month, I was hoping that this amount is enough to serve My Daily Thoughts at the beginning. However the recent increasing of visitor number push me to think again how to reduce data transfer from my web server. To optimize data transfer, I use several method.
