Beware of Cookies
15 April 2007You may know about Cookies on your web browser. It gives identification to your browser and its useful for authenticating, tracking and maintaining specific information about you. Once you visit a website it deliver a small package of data to your computer, and stay in your hard disk until expired or get deleted
Cookies itself is not harmful but it could be used for abusive purpose, for instance in affiliate marketing. Normally an affiliate link (like several links in this page) will deliver you to the reseller site with certain affiliate ID only when you click on the link. If you not decided to buy on the reseller site right away, the affiliate ID still remain on your computer as a cookie. When you revisiting the reseller site several days later and buy something from that place, those cookies will be used as reference and the owner will receive credit of it.
But recently I read article from John Chow about abusing cookies. Its a bad suggestion and considered as cheating by many major affiliate program. Those trick works by putting affiliate links inside an iframe code. Since it loads every time you visit the page automatically, its like forcing an affiliate cookie down someone’s throat. Many affiliate program will banned the website owner immediately if they noticed those cheat trick.

Conserving Bandwidth

Bandwidth limitation is this Blog’s problem. I was not expecting for a huge web traffic coming just overnight which could drag my bandwidth near to it’s limit. Well it’s not yet happened but I must aware about it’s possibility.
Several days ago, on 5th April to be exact, I receive a short exposure on StumbleUpon. I didn’t even notice which article was gaining that short exposure since I can’t trace that back on StumbleUpon. It was a very short appearance I guess. I knew about it later when I checked my cache on Google and I saw a wrong image appeared on this page. Then I checked my visitor’s statistic just to realized that I received a surge of web traffic coming from StumbleUpon.
This surge of visitors remind me to optimize this Blog’s file size even more. The main page size is around 107 KB at the moment. This means my bandwidth will be used up after 10.000 hits only on the main page. Because I have only 1 GB data transfer limit for each month, I was hoping that this amount is enough to serve My Daily Thoughts at the beginning. However the recent increasing of visitor number push me to think again how to reduce data transfer from my web server. To optimize data transfer, I use several method.

How To Redeem Your Gift Certificate On Dreamhost
4 April 2007When you receive a gift certificate on Dreamhost you can redeem it according to it’s amount. Recently I received a gift certificate from Cosa Aranda and I redeemed it for a new domain name. Since I don’t have account on Dreamhost, I have to create a new one. I will describe what I did to get a new domain name by redeeming a gift certificate on dreamhost.
First step is navigate to sign up page because you have to create a new account here. Click sign up now on the left-bar menu. You will see several choices of hosting plan. But chose plan level 0 to register a domain name only. Select also automatic rebill once a year, since the gift certificate credit is only for 1 year. Don’t forget to select radio button register a new domain for free.
Scroll down the page and fill all forms of your personal information, including email address and your password. Don’t forget to opt out I agree to abide by Dreamhost TOS. Then click Continue to Secure Payment.

I just received an upgrade notification from WordPress.org about the stable release of WordPress version 2.1.3. This is a good news for me and obviously I upgraded this Blog afterward. You read this post on upgraded version though. 
Yet I become more confident with this Blog security, after my previous post which reveal vulnerability on WordPress 2.1.2. However it is always be better to play save with security issues, considering that careless Admin is an easy target of getting hack. For a security measure of your Blog you can use this suggestion:
- Keep your admin password strong and save it, also it would be better to change it regularly
- Don’t use Instant Messenger or Replying email with added live-link to your website while you’re logged on with admin mode. Sign Out first and chat or email afterward
- Always Sign Out after finishing your admin’s work
- Clear Cookies from your Browser after you finished. For Mozilla FireFox you can select menu Tools >> Clear Private Data
- Use only 1 PC for all of administrative works on your web. Public Internet terminal is a good starting place for hacking, get tidy up when you have to do so
- Back-up your data base regularly and keep it save
